We face mental health challenges daily. From residents, staff and families. This webinar is designed to equip you with knowledge and skills to support the mental well-being of older adults. We'll understand the unique challenges to older adults struggling with mental health issues and learn strategies to promote mental well-being and treatment while addressing stigma. Join us to enhance awareness, foster compassion, and empower yourselves to create supportive environments.

This training is designed to equip attendees with the knowledge and skills to support the mental well-being of older adults. Participants will gain insights into the prevalence of mental health issues impacting older adults, understand the unique challenges to older adults struggling with mental health issues, and learn strategies to promote mental well-being and treatment while addressing stigma. The training aims to enhance awareness, foster compassion, and empower participants to create supportive environments for older adults’ mental health.

Learning objectives
  • Identify the prevalence of common mental health conditions in older adults, understanding their symptoms and treatments.
  • Understand the unique challenges and considerations in older adult mental health, including age-related cognitive changes, co-occurrence of physical and mental health conditions, social isolation, and barriers to accessing mental health care.
  • Address the stigma surrounding older adult mental health by defining its forms, discussing negative impacts, and implementing strategies to decrease the impact of stigma

Vice President Clinical Services, Touchstone Mental Health
Chris Westergaard, MSW, LICSW, has worked in the mental health field for over twenty years working with children, families, adults, and older adults. This experience ranges from customized living services to providing psychotherapy in private practice. Chris has served in various leadership roles, currently serving as the Vice President of Clinical Services with Touchstone Mental Health. He has overseen Minnesota’s first supportive housing program focused on older adults who have experienced homeless, providing services to address treated and untreated mental illness in addition to other co-morbidities. Chris has developed and presented training related to aging and mental health to the Minnesota Gerontological Society, the Minnesota Board on Aging, and the Minnesota Nursing Home Social Workers Association.
